Broken Bread
(In Remembrance of Me)
(Slowly, melodically, purposefully)
Take this broken bread I give.
Take. Eat. It’s My body.
Forgiving all who eat of it,
And believe my story.
This do ye in remembrance of me,
Each time you’re together.
Love each one as I have loved you,
‘Til we’re all together
Take this cup of Blood I shed,
Shed for you and many.
Blessing all who drink of it,
And believe my story.
This do ye in remembrance of me,
Each time you’re together.
Love each one as I have loved you,
‘Til we’re all together
You will see the Son of Man
Broken down and left to die.
Where I go you cannot come.
My Father will be glorified.
This do ye in remembrance of me,
Each time you’re together.
Love each one as I have loved you,
‘Til we’re all together
In three days I will rise again,
Alive, triumphant and holy.
You will go throughout the world,
You will tell my story.
This do ye in remembrance of me,
Each time you’re together.
Love each one as I have loved you,
‘Til we’re all together
You will go throughout the world.
Will …
YOU … (with emphasis)
Tell … (artistically with passion)
My Story?
The Story of the Broken Bread Song
One day I was asleep in bed and I was awoken by the faint sound of music. It sounded like someone had left a radio on downstairs. I got up and quietly searched the house for where the sound was coming from. There was no radio, there was no TV, and I couldn’t find the source of the sound. I went back to bed and I just lay there and listened. When I listen carefully a quiet tune began to emerge and it repeated over and over again. Where those angels that were singing? I decided to get up again and pull out my flute and some music paper. This was back in the day when there is no such thing as the Internet nor music programs nor digital anything.

Over and over again I picked up my flute, played a few notes, and wrote them down on the music paper. It was a long and laborious way to write music but this is the way it had to be done. Not only could I hear the music, but I could hear the words as well. For hours I played and wrote, and played and wrote. When I finally finished I crawled back into bed, exhausted.

The next morning I felt that I needed to show this to somebody so I gathered my things and drove over to the pastor’s house. When I played it for the pastor and his wife, they realized that this was definitely a communion song. Since our monthly communion was to take place the next morning, he decided that we could arrange to play the music during the communion. I felt like the little drummer boy that could only play his drum for the Christ child. I was not in the church band, and all I had was my flute and my voice.

Sunday morning came only too quickly. I wore a nice dress and I had my flute with me. When the time came the pastor and his wife prepared the sacraments and called me up to take my place. When he gave the signal I played the music and then sang the part of the song about the bread while the deacons handed out the bread to the congregants. When he was ready he signalled me again and I played second part of the song and then sang the part about the wine while the deacons handed the wine out to the congregants. When he was finished he signalled me a third time and I played and sang the conclusion of the song. The communion ceremony was now concluded.
When I stepped off the stage I noticed that everyone in the audience was wiping tears from their eyes. Old Mrs. Robinson stood up and gave me the biggest hug ever and said how beautiful she felt the song had been.

This was many years ago and the song has been tucked away in my music folders ever since. Recently, the Holy Spirit reminded me that this song was given to me not to sit in my cupboards but to bless the world. Now that technology has improved tremendously this task is now possible. Below you will find several different versions of the same song that can be played with whatever instruments you have available. Please take up the challenge to bless the world however you can.
